Cactus Light is the first lighting sculpture to be released from the Milan/Istanbul design collective Turan Oztopal design studio. Designed by the studio’s founder, Turan Oztopal, Cactus Light takes inspiration from the simplistic beauty of nature and the enchanting minimalism of the desert.
It’s often said that the first experience of visiting the desert is akin to that of being in an anechoic chamber. With the notable absence of sound and other visual stimuli contributing to a marked decluttering – and recalibration – of the senses, it’s perhaps a valid comparison.
Unlike an anechoic chamber, however, the presence and effect of natural light makes the desert experience all the more curious and ethereal. Through the ebb and flow of the sun’s natural illumination, the desert lives a Jekyll and Hyde existence of sorts. Scorched and bright during the day and cold and unforgiving at night, light is the regulator of desert experience.
The Desert Experience
A heightened awareness of the desert – and one’s own place within nature – is ultimately the inspiration behind Cactus Light, the first lighting sculpture to be released from the Milan/Istanbul design collective Turan Oztopal design studio
The resulting design by the studio’s founder, Turan Oztopal, succeeds in reducing the sensory experience of the desert into two constituent elements: light and material.
In addition to being available in both cordless rechargeable and cable varieties, Cactus Light is characterised by a terrazzo base representing earth, green iron stems and branches connected by rose gold brass, and an opaque glass ball serving as the sculpture’s sole light source.
‘The desert is an otherworldly space where the power and beauty of nature remains undisturbed,’ comments Oztopal. ‘In addition to capturing the magical essence of the desert scenescape, Cactus Light playfully inverts the notion of the night time desert environment as a place totally devoid of light. In this sense, Cactus Light seeks to amplify individual experience.’
Cactus Light will be officially launched at the Milan Design Week, which is set to take place from 21 to 26 April 2021.
